Exterior Brick Painting & Staining

All About Exterior Brick Painting & Staining

Brick and stone exteriors are timelessly beautiful, long-lasting, fire-resistant, and help lower utility costs. But this material does require upkeep. If you have a brick home or commercial property and are thinking about staining or painting the bricks, read on to find out everything you need to know.

Important Brick & Stone Maintenance

In and around the suburbs of Chicago, we have hundreds of beautiful buildings with brick exteriors. One of the things to watch for is cracks. It’s essential to inspect all bricks and grout for cracks each year. Thin cracks in grout are relatively simple to patch, and it’s best to do that when they happen so they don’t open up and get more substantial. If the cracks are ignored, you’ll need an experienced mason to fix the damage. Any damaged or cracked mortar needs removing before new mortar is applied. Cracking and damage mostly happen in our older historic homes around Chicagoland. When restoring, painting, staining, any bricks or stone, it’s important to find an experienced contractor like Klasek Painting.

6 Things To Know About Staining & Painting Brick

1. When the stain is applied to brick it’s absorbed into the surface. It’s just like when you stain wood – the stain is absorbed into the wood. Brick stain works on stone as well. And because it’s not paint, it won’t peel or chip away.

2. Stain can match existing brick or create a new look. If you’re not sure what color you want, it’s a smart idea to get a few different samples and try them out on loose brick (not on your house) or in a hidden spot that won’t be seen since the bricks absorb the color.

3. Brick stain does not have a strong odor, so there’s no need to escape the house during application. Staining during winter is possible too, as long as the temperature isn’t too low. It’s important to follow the instructions on the can for temperature application.

4. Don’t forget to stain the mortar to match the newly stained brick. That way you’ll have a consistent and even look. The same thing goes if you’re painting brick or stone.

5. You can’t stain bricks covered with a non-porous sealant (like paint or varnish). Once the pores are closed, the stain can’t penetrate the surface. But in that case, you can paint the bricks.

6. Cost depends on the job and contractor. Some contractors charge by the square foot, while others charge by the day or half-day. The main importance is to contact a contractor you can trust and that you know will give you a fair deal.
